Prostate conditions: urology consultation in Rabat
The prostate is a gland of the male reproductive system, located below the bladder and around the urethra. With age it can enlarge, become inflamed or develop cancer. At Dr Najib Abakka's urology practice in Rabat (Hassan), every situation is assessed with an appropriate workup before any treatment is proposed.
Prostate conditions we treat
- Benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate)
- Acute or chronic prostatitis
- Individual prostate cancer screening (PSA, digital rectal exam)
- Prostate cancer: diagnosis, treatment and follow-up
When should you see a urologist about your prostate?
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- Weak or interrupted urine stream
- Difficulty starting to urinate or a feeling of incomplete emptying
- Sudden urges that are hard to hold
- Blood in the urine or semen
- A raised PSA on a blood test
Assessment and diagnosis
The assessment starts with a discussion of your symptoms and a clinical examination, including a digital rectal exam when needed. Depending on the situation, it may be completed by a PSA test, urine analysis, ultrasound, uroflowmetry or prostate MRI. If cancer is suspected, an ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy confirms the diagnosis.
Treatments offered, depending on the indication
- Monitoring and lifestyle advice
- Medication for an enlarged prostate
- Endoscopic resection or laser vaporization of the prostate
- Prostatic urethral stent for selected patients
- Ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy
- Prostatectomy for prostate cancer, minimally invasive or robot-assisted depending on the indication
Frequently asked questions
Does a high PSA mean prostate cancer?
No. PSA can rise with an enlarged, infected or inflamed prostate. Its interpretation depends on age, prostate size and how the values change over time: the urologist decides which further tests are needed.
At what age should you have your prostate checked?
Individual prostate cancer screening is usually discussed from age 50, and from 45 with a family history. The decision is made with the urologist after explaining its benefits and limits.
Can an enlarged prostate turn into cancer?
No, benign prostatic hyperplasia does not turn into cancer. The two conditions can, however, coexist, which is why a urological assessment is worthwhile when symptoms appear.
